In this video T.A. McCann talks about emerging ways of working. What he says reminds me of something Hugh McLeod wrote recently, to paraphrase: “The future of the world depends on re-uniting work and love.” I agree, because unless you’re working at something you love then you are a slave, which ain’t pretty. In the video T.A. McCann says “Finding people that you share some common goal, or some common outcome, or some way that you want to work on something together - whether that’s helping them or them helping you, or both - that’s interesting, that’s connecting, that’s creating a relationship, that’s the part that’s exciting. The future of work is always trying to do something for someone else, not yourself.”

So I decided to see how much I’m living up to this idea(l) of work by writing a list of names of people I’ve collaborated with in some way for mutual benefit since the start of April 2011, and the results surprised me: 29, which made me smile. Of course, what’s far more important than the number of people you collaborate with is the quality of relationships you build and the quality of the processes set in motion by your collaboration.

If there’s a conclusion to be drawn from this it’s simply that you get to where you want to be a lot quicker if you’re working alongside other people and trying to give them what they need to get to where they’re going. Simple.
