Extract from ‘Club Land’, by Richard Evans.
“Aren’t they happy?” Me to my guide,
“I thought the chase is what they want.”
“And so do they, it’s not just pride
that keeps them stuck. Like hungry ghosts,
in all they have, they feel a lack.
A camera rolls, watching their most
thrilling times with cold rebuke:
‘Is this all? Is this all you have?
Just work and sleep and drink and puke?”
So every week they end up coming
here to show themselves they’re living,
but they’re not. We best keep going…”
From the collection, ‘Orbiting’.
